Texas Organizing Project condemns blatant anti-immigrant, GOP bill voted on today in Congress

The following is a statement from Joaquin Guerra, political director of the Texas Organizing Project, in opposition to H.R. 5759, the “Executive Amnesty Prevent Act of 2014,” introduced today by Rep. Ted Yoho.

“Today’s vote by House Republicans was a clear endorsement of maximum deportations, keeping millions of families living in fear of being separating by deportations, of keeping millions of workers vulnerable to exploitation, of keeping our immigration system completely broken and dysfunctional.

“After failing to act to pass a bill that would have fixed our broken immigration system, House Republicans are maintaining their deport-them-all policy, without regard to the benefits that the President’s executive action will have on keeping families together and our economy.

“The vote on this bill, symbolic or not, will not be forgotten by voters who are fed up with a Congress that refuses to take its governing job seriously and opts for divisive actions.

“Congress must build off President Obama’s executive action and pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation that will keep families together and allow millions more to come out of the shadows.”
